Hey Guys!

Just wanted to go over trail communications for Cruisers on the Rockies this year.

Good radio comms make a huge difference out on the trail. They keep everyone in the group on the same page, let you call for help if needed, and make the day a lot more fun. There’s nothing better than listening to the banter and excitement bouncing between trucks all day.

Cruisers on the Rockies is an FRS/GMRS-only event — we won’t be using CB at all. FRS and GMRS are just way clearer, more reliable, and easier to use than CB.

Quick Breakdown:

  • FRS radios are simple, inexpensive (you can grab a decent pair for $20–$30), and require no license.

  • GMRS radios are more powerful and need a license (super easy to get online — no test required, just a small fee).

Here is a great write up by Midland on GMRS licenses with a link and instructions on how to get your license: WHY DO I NEED A GMRS LICENSE & HOW DO I GET IT?

The great thing is FRS and GMRS radios can talk to each other on the same channels, so everyone can communicate no matter what they’re running.

If you only wheel a few times a year, a basic FRS handheld will work great. But if you have a dedicated trail rig and plan to wheel more often, I highly recommend stepping up to a GMRS radio. Most of the trail leaders (including me) run GMRS in our trucks.

My Go-To Recommendations:

FRS Handhelds:

GMRS:

I’ve personally used all of these and they work awesome.

Every trail run will have a primary channel and a backup channel. Please test your radios before the event and each morning before hitting the trail. Bring extra batteries or a way to charge them during the day — starting each run with a full charge is always smart.

Got questions about radios or setups? Jump into the Cruisers on the Rocks Facebook Group. There are tons of experienced guys (and trail leaders) in there happy to help.

That’s it for now — keeping it simple but effective. Next email will be about camping info, coming your way soon.

Can’t wait to see you all in Silverton!
